Women’s Squash Falls to Cornell at CSA National Collegiate Team Championships

Columbia meets Tufts in a consolation match Friday
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Columbia women's squash team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 8 Cornell, 5-4, in the first round of the 2024 CSA National Collegiate Team Championships on Thursday at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center.
The Lions will now compete in the consolation bracket with a 3 p.m. match against Tufts on Friday.
Cornell took control early with two wins in the first wave. The Big Red's Wen Li Lai earned a 11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 9-11, 12-10 win over previously undefeated Simmi Chan in the No. 1 spot. Aishwarya Khubchandani then posted an 11-6, 11-5, 11-8 win against Erica McGillicuddy in the No. 2 position. Nourin Khalifa battled through five games to earn Columbia's first win of the afternoon in an 11-5, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-3 victory over Ananya Dabke at the No. 3 spot.
The Big Red won two out three in the second wave to extend the lead over the Lions. Cornell's Alysa Ali earned a 10-12, 11-4, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8 win over Sarah Cao in the No. 4 position. Christa Kay then prevailed in four games with a 11-5, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7 win against Amal Izhar at No. 5. Aleeza Khan put a Columbia point up by defeating Devon Shatzman, 10-12, 12-10, 11-5, 11-5 in the No. 6 spot.
Columbia closed out the final wave by winning two of three. Eugenia Li took a 3-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-8 win against Ania LaDow in the No. 7 spot. Kaavya Bansal also secured a win in five games over Maya Voloshin, 10-12, 4-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-8 in the No. 8 position. Advita Sharma was defeated in three games by Saniya Jaggin at No. 9.
