The Championships return to Morningside Heights for the first time since 2015
NEW YORK - Columbia fencing is set to host the Ivy League Round Robin Championships February 10-11 in Levien Gymnasium. The event returns to Morningside Heights for the first time since 2015 when the Lions swept the men's and women's titles to begin a stretch of seven consecutive seasons of winning at least one conference championship.
The women's team enters the tournament as the top seed and is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to the United States Fencing Coaches Association's midseason coaches poll. The women are 28-3 overall and have won seven of their last eight, with the lone defeat coming to reining NCAA Champions, Notre Dame.
On the men's side, Columbia is the No. 2 seed for the event and No. 2 in the USFCA poll. After a 3-0 weekend at the Brian Palestis Memorial at Wagner, the Lions sit at 28-3 in dual matches this season.
Each of the teams will fence in dual matches against each of the other squads. The team or teams with the best record will emerge as Ivy League Champions. The action gets underway on Saturday, February. 10, at 11 a.m., when the women take on Brown. The men are slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. against Harvard. The full schedule can be found on the Ivy League Round-Robin Tournament Central page.
Last year, both teams finished second after falling in their final matches to decide the champion. Nora Burke capped off the weekend with a 16-1 record in sabre to win the women's individual championship. The Lions have four returning All-Ivy League selections from 2023, including first-teamers Justin Haddad (men's epee), Skyler Liverant (men's epee) and Colby Harley (men's sabre) and Chloe Gouhin (women's sabre), who earned second-team honors.
