Columbia will host Cornell in the final home matches of the season
NEW YORK – The Columbia men's and women's squash teams will host Cornell for the final home matches of the season Sunday at the SL Green StreetSquash Center in Harlem. Seniors from both squads will be recognized before the matches begin at 1 p.m.
From the men's team, Columbia will recognize seniors Harold Castiaux, Rutvik Rau and Sameer Saxena. On the women's side, Renee Chan, Erica McGillicuddy and Megan Meyerson will be recognized.
The seventh-ranked men's team is 5-6 overall this season after defeating No. 10 Dartmouth and losing to No. 4 Harvard last weekend. The regular season finale looks to be a tough test against No. 6 Cornell.
Shaurya Bawa, Laszlo Godde, Zach Nam, Paarth Ambani, Rutvik Rau and Adam Goad all won via three-game sweeps against their opponents. Jacob Bulbulia needed just four games to win in the fifth spot as the Lions took a dominant 7-2 win over Dartmouth.
The men's match at Harvard was a tough loss. Columbia took victories in the 7-9 positions courtesy of Paarth Ambani, Rutvik Rau and Adam Goad. All three wins took over an hour and went to five games. Ambani and Rau held off rallies after their opponents won games three and four to push the match the distance. Goad came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Connor Stoltz, 6-11, 10-12, 11-5, 11-8, 11-7.
Laszlo Godde dropped a gut-wrenching result in the No. 4 match to Tate Harms, 12-10, 7-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8. The Lions also won games in the No. 2 and No. 6 bouts, with Harold Castiaux and Zach Nam each battling but ultimately falling in four games.
The 10th-ranked women's team enters Sunday with a 3-8 overall mark. Columbia picked up its first Ivy League win of the season last Saturday with a 7-2 win at Dartmouth before falling at Harvard on Sunday.
The reigning College Squash Association (CSA) National Champion, Simmi Chan kept her perfect record intact over the weekend. She took a dominant, 11-4, 11-1, 11-4 win against Dartmouth's Maria Clara Ramirez Velasquez in the top match Saturday. Chan then improved to 11-0 on the collegiate season Sunday with a five-game victory over Marina Stefanoni, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5. Chan came into the match ranked No. 1 in the College Squash Association for women's international singles. Stefanoni came in ranked No. 2.
Erica McGillicuddy, Nourin Khalifa and Advita Sharma all won in three games against their opponents at Dartmouth. Sarah Cao, Aleeza Khan and Kaavya Bansal won their matches in four games to help Columbia seal the win.
