Baseball Falls at Santa Clara Tuesday Night

Lions rally for three runs in the ninth but come up short

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Skye Selinsky hit his third home run in as many days and drove in three runs for the second straight game but Columbia baseball dropped the final game of its West Coast swing to Santa Clara, 14-9, on Tuesday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.

Sam Miller had two hits, including a bases-clearing double in the ninth inning to make it a five-run game after the Lions (3-8) were down to their final strike trailing 14-6. Columbia rallied in the last frame by getting all nine in the order to the plate, but Hunter Snyder struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Anton Lazits was the lone Lion to record three hits on the night, socking his fourth home run of the year and two doubles in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with three runs scored. The Lions scored a run in each of the final six innings.

Santa Clara (10-5) recorded a five-spot in the home second for the first runs of the evening. Coleman Brigman capped off the inning with a grand slam. Griffin Palfrey got the start for Columbia and allowed five runs (all unearned) over two innings of work.

The Broncos tacked on another run in the third on an RBI single before the Lions got on the board in the top of the fourth. Selinsky belted his third home run in as many days to make it 6-1. Santa Clara quickly got the run back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly.

Selinsky then added a sacrifice fly of his own in the fifth inning to bring Santa Clara's margin within five. In the sixth, Lazits lasted a solo home run to left field to bring the score to 7-3 Broncos.

Santa Clara responded again, answering with two runs in the home sixth to take a 9-3 lead. Then Selinsky would drive in his third run of the night with his second sacrifice fly, plating Snyder to bring it back within five again.

The Broncos scored a pair on a single and a bases loaded walk in the home seventh to hold an 11-4 advantage.

The Lions then scored for a fifth-straight inning when Owen Estabrook split the right-center field gap for a two-out, two RBI double to trim the Broncos' lead back to five.

Columbia begins a three-game set at No. 11 East Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m.
