Softball Falls to South Dakota State, No. 23 Kentucky in Doubleheader

Columbia plays South Dakota State and Kentucky again Sunday

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Columbia softball team lost both games of its doubleheader Saturday at the John Cropp Classic hosted by Kentucky.
 
South Dakota State Recap
South Dakota State used a solo home run in the top of the first to quickly take control. The Jackrabbits used a six-spot in the third inning to pull away, and two runs in the sixth lifted South Dakota State to the 9-0 run-rule victory after six innings.
 
The Lions finished the game with four hits, but seven runners were left on base in the loss. Cami Neal, Eleni Katsivalis, Caroline Palys and Paton Shimansky each registered a hit in the game.
 
Raquel Reyes (3-5) was charged with the loss as she fired 2.2 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits. Reyes totaled two strikeouts in the outing. Charlotte Laidler and Lily McCord came in as relief. Laider worked 3.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
 
Kentucky Recap
No. 23 Kentucky used three home runs to put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Wildcats tacked on two runs in the second and four runs in the third to finish off a 12-3 run-rule victory in five innings.
 
Columbia scored its first runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Tatum Hubble was hit by a pitch and Maddie Souza reached on a fielder's choice to put two Lions on with no outs. Savanna Messner stepped up next and launched a three-run home run over the center field wall.
 
Eleni Katsivalis, Liv Madkins, Souza and Messner each recorded a hit in the second game of the day.
 
Sarah Mikami (0-4) earned the start and was charged with the loss as she allowed four runs on three hits. McCord came in and worked 2.1 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits. Laidler pitched 1.2 innings and tallied three strikeouts.
 
ON DECK
Columbia finishes the weekend with a doubleheader Sunday. The Lions meet South Dakota State at 11 a.m. before capping the day off against Kentucky for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
