Baseball Defeats Harvard, 6-4, to Earn Series Win

Santana and Madrigal surrender just four hits; strikeout six

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball held on to beat Harvard on Sunday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, 6-4, in the rubber match of its first Ivy League series of the season.

Hunter Snyder led off the home first inning with his first career home run and finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Cole Hage, Skye Selinsky, and Anton Lazits also tallied multi-hit games.

On the mound, Thomas Santana and Brandon Madrigal got the Lions (6-12, 2-1) through the Crimson order, combining to allow four hits and striking out six. Santana allowed one hit over the first four innings. Madrigal polished off the final five innings to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the year.

"Our pitching really stepped up this weekend and gave us an opportunity to be successful," head coach Brett Boretti said. "It's a real good series win to start off the Ivy League season."

Following Snyder's blast over the right-center field fence to put Columbia up 1-0 early, Lazits drove in a run on a single to bring Hage in. The Lions capped a three-run inning in a first-and-third situation where Cole Fellows stole second and Jack Cooper swiped home in a double steal.

The Lions expanded their lead in the second inning to 5-0 when Selinsky ripped a two-run double down the left field line that plated Hage and Snyder.

Harvard (3-13, 1-2) came alive in the fifth inning to post four runs on a bases-clearing double from Ben Rounds. Rounds then scored on a passed ball later in the inning to trim Columbia's lead to 5-4.

Columbia tacked on a key insurance run in the home eighth on a Cooper sacrifice fly to give the senior his 21st RBI of the year and the Lions a 6-4 advantage. Madrigal tossed an easy 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the game.

"When adrenaline's pumping, and you have your team behind you with good energy in the dugout, it's tough not to keep going," Madrigal said. "It's one series, we're happy to pick up a series win, but we have another big series next weekend and we also want to win on Tuesday."

The Lions are now 31-6 at home since the beginning of 2022. Columbia continues its homestand with a midweek matchup on Tuesday against Manhattan at 3:30 p.m.
