Cooper’s Go-Ahead Double Lifts Baseball Past Manhattan, 10-7

Lions score four late runs unanswered to earn win

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball came from behind with a three-run seventh inning to defeat Manhattan, 10-7, on Tuesday afternoon from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

Jack Cooper recorded his third five-RBI performance of the season and now leads the Ivy League with 26 on the year. The senior belted his seventh home run of the season in the third inning and is now tied for the team lead with Cole Hage.

With the Lions trailing 7-6 in the home seventh inning, Cooper swatted a two-run double to put Columbia (7-12, 2-1) in front. Cole Fellows followed up with an RBI single later in the inning to give the Lions a 9-7 advantage.

Miles Blackwell launched a solo home run in the eighth to add insurance for Columbia. James Vaughn finished off the Jaspers (7-16, 1-2) with two scoreless innings, tallying three strikeouts en route to his first save in a Columbia uniform.

Griffin Palfrey earned the win on the mound after tossing 1.2 scoreless frames before handing the ball off to Vaughn. Palfrey allowed just two hits and had a strikeout. Fellows posted three runs batted in on the day, while Eric Jeon added an RBI on a groundout in the second inning.

Manhattan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and then opened a 5-3 lead after three innings. Columbia's three-run fifth inning put the Lions in front for the first time in the game, 6-5.

The Lions have now won four contests in a row against Manhattan and are 7-1 at home this year. Columbia continues Ivy League play at home with a doubleheader on Saturday against Penn. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
