Softball Splits Doubleheader at Cornell

Columbia bounced back to win the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia softball team split Saturday's doubleheader on the road at Cornell after bouncing back to take a 10-1 run-rule victory in the second game of Saturday's twin bill.

Columbia (8-15, 3-2) took the momentum early in the first game Saturday as Savanna Messner launched a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Lions would not score the rest of the game though as Cornell pulled away down the stretch to take the 6-2 win.

Charlotte Laidler (0-1) was charged with the loss as she gave up four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Raquel Reyes earned the start and tossed 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

Looking to even the series, Columbia jumped out to a 2-1 lead after two innings of the second game. The Columbia offense then exploded for four runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to earn the 10-1 run-rule victory.

Maddie Souza led the Lions with three hits in the second game. She had a double and a home run to total two RBI and three runs. Cami Neal tallied two hits, both coming as home runs. Neal collected three RBI and two runs to help lead the Lions to the win.

Sarah Mikami (3-5) earned the win in the second game as she fired all 6.0 innings. Mikami allowed just one run on four hits and earned one strikeout.
