CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — The Columbia men's golf team completed the Cabo Collegiate on Tuesday at the Twin Dolphin Club. Competing against some of the strongest teams in the country, the Lions finished in 15th place.
"We had a wonderful experience playing the Cabo Collegiate and are very grateful to our hosts and tournament committee," Director of Golf
Rich Mueller said. "As for our play this week, we didn't meet our goals, but we know adversity builds character."
The field matched the Lions up against some of the top-ranked programs in the country, which included No. 3 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 6 Arizona State, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 8 Arizona, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 12 Florida State, No. 18 Cal, No. 33 Oklahoma State and No. 37 Baylor. The Lions were challenged from the very start at Twin Dolphin's par 71, 7,156-yard layout. Senior
DJ Francey and junior
Wyatt McGovern carded scores of 3-over 74 and 4-over 75, respectively, in Sunday's first round. They both sat middle of the pack on the individual leaderboard, which contained 80 total players.
McGovern followed up with a second-round 73. He carded five birdies in that round and got as low as 1-under on the day on multiple occasions. Following Tuesday's final round, he was the team's top individual finisher at 19-over for the tournament.
The Lions return to action next week at the GCU Invitational. The two-day tournament takes place Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12-13, at the GCU Golf Course in Phoenix, Arizona.
