Baseball Drops West Coast Opener to No. 23 UC Irvine

Lions back in action Saturday with a doubleheader

FRESNO, Calif. — Columbia baseball dropped the first game of its West Coast trip to No. 23 UC Irvine on Friday from Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium, 32-2.

UC Irvine (12-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Lions came to bat. The Anteaters tallied two hits in the frame and benefitted from two errors by Columbia (3-4). Reigning NCAA Player of the Week Jack Cooper quickly got the Lions on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

Columbia added another run in the home second on a Cole Hage RBI single that plated Jack Kail to make it a 4-2 game.

Columbia starter Joe Sheets went three innings and was tagged for seven runs (four earned) on four hits. The junior walked three and recorded two strikeouts.

Will Harrigan tossed a scoreless sixth inning out of the bullpen, working around two walks.

The Lions will play Fresno State on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET before facing UC Irvine again later on at 8 p.m. ET.
