Baseball Swept In Saturday’s Games Against Fresno State, No. 23 UC Irvine

Cooper stays hot by going 5-for-8 on the day with two RBIs

FRESNO, Calif.— Columbia baseball dropped its first game Saturday to Fresno State, 8-5, before falling to No. 23 UC Irvine in game two, 25-7, from Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.

Game 1 Recap

The Lions (3-6) struck first in the opening inning on a Skye Selinsky RBI single to put the visitors up 1-0. Cole Hage came around to score after leading off the game with a double.

Fresno State (10-4, 2-1) knotted it back up in the second inning when Bobby Blandford scored on a wild pitch. Hage would make it a one-run game in the fifth when he blasted a solo home run to make it 3-2 Bulldogs. It was the senior's fourth long ball of the year.

Fresno State exploded for five more runs in the bottom half of the fifth, recording five hits that included a two-run blast by Blandford. Columbia responded with a three-run sixth inning to cut Fresno State's lead to 8-5.

The Bulldogs bullpen was able to put together three scoreless innings of work to close out a victory on their home field. Aiden Cremarosa was credited with the save. Hage, Jack Cooper, and Jack Kail all recorded multi-hit games.

Brandon Madrigal posted a scoreless frame in the eighth and had a strikeout.

Game 2 Recap

UC Irvine (13-1) took a 3-0 lead over the first two innings off Lions starting pitcher Jagger Edwards. The Antears scratched across their first three runs on two singles and a sacrifice fly.

In the home fourth, UC Irvine crushed two grand slams and posted a 10-spot in the frame to go ahead, 13-0. The Lions got on the board in the top of the fifth when Hage doubled in a run and then Kail blasted his first home run of the season to cut UC Irvine's lead to 13-4.

Sam Miller socked a solo blast to continue the Lions' attempt at a comeback. Cooper then stayed hot, depositing a two-run home run to right field to make it 13-7.

UC Irvine would take on eight more runs in the home eighth to put the game away and earn its second victory over Columbia in as many days.
