Baseball Holds On to Defeat St. John’s, 11-9

Four-run eighth propels Lions to road win

QUEENS, N.Y. — Columbia baseball came out on top with a gutsy 11-9 victory over St. John's on Tuesday night at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

Griffin Palfrey smacked a two-run triple in the midst of a four-run eighth inning for Columbia (16-14, 9-3) to give the Lions a 10-8 lead. Columbia held on as Sam Miller drove in a run on a groundout to cap the scoring in the inning and push the margin to three. St. John's falls to 23-8-1.

James Vaughn battled to earn the save, surrendering a run in the ninth inning but then got a strikeout and groundout to close out the game. He logged two innings of work and allowed three hits. JD Ogden threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Jack Cooper, Anton Lazits, Skye Selinsky and Miller each drove in a pair of runs in the win. Cole Hage and Hunter Snyder scored two runs a piece.

Down 4-0 in the third inning, Columbia rallied for five runs in the frame. Jack Kail drove in the Lions' first run of the night on a groundout. Then Cooper ripped a two-run double to make it 4-3. Lazits put the visitors in front with a two-run home run the next batter later.

St. John's quickly responded with two runs to tie the game at 6-6 in the home fifth on an RBI single and RBI double. Columbia then went back in front on a Palfrey infield single that scored Snyder.

Columbia heads to Brown this weekend for a three-game set with the Bears. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 11:30 a.m.
