Women’s Tennis Holds On for 4-3 Win Over Yale

Columbia finishes the regular season at home Sunday for senior day
NEW YORK – The 48th-ranked Columbia women's tennis team scrapped out a 4-3 win over No. 49 Yale on Saturday afternoon at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. The Lions improve to 16-5 overall with a 4-2 mark in Ivy League play.
The Lions rolled through singles to get the match started with the lead. Columbia captured wins in the No. 1 and 2 doubles while the No. 3 spot went unfinished when the Lions clinched the doubles point.
The duo of Gayathri Krishnan and Sophia Strugnell earned the first doubles win of the afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Shyla Aggarwal and Jamie Kim in the No. 2 spot. Anna Zhang and Sophia Wang clinched the doubles point for the Lions with a 6-2 win against Mirabelle Brettkelly and Orly Ogilvy in the top doubles.
Yale struck first in singles as Ann Wright Guerry defeated Wang, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles. Columbia answered back moments later as Krishnan battled through three sets to secure a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Aggarwal in the No. 3 spot.
The Bulldogs tied the match again as Ogilvy defeated Fatima Keita in the top singles. Julia Haynes quickly responded with a 6-0, 7-6(3) win against Brettkelly in the No. 2 singles to push the Lions ahead again. Rebecca Lynn took a 6-4, 7-5 win over Winta Tewolde in the No. 4 spot to tie the match, 3-3.
The attention then turned to the No. 6 singles as Rachele Rimondini and Kim battled in the third set. Rimondini and Kim split the first two sets before Rimondini cruised through the third set to earn a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win to clinch the match victory for Columbia.
Columbia closes out the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. against Brown. As part of senior day, Columbia's seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the match.
