Baseball Drops Ivy Tournament Opener to Penn

Lions face Princeton Saturday at 11 a.m.

NEW YORK — Top-seeded Columbia baseball fell in its Ivy League Tournament opener to No. 4 seed Penn, 8-4, on Friday afternoon from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

Columbia (26-17) needs to win against No. 2 seed Princeton on Saturday at 11 a.m. to keep its season alive. The game can be watched live on ESPN+ or followed via live stats.

With a back-and-forth game knotted at 4-4 in the eighth inning, Penn (21-22) re-took the lead with three runs, all with two outs. The Quakers had four hits in the inning off three different Columbia relief pitchers to take the 7-4 lead. Penn tacked on another two-out run in the ninth for insurance.

Penn opened the scoring in the second inning on a wild pitch to lead 1-0. Lions starter Derek Yoo would escape a jam with a strikeout to strand two runners in the frame. Yoo finished with four strikeouts.

The Quakers added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. Thomas Santana relieved Yoo with two outs in the inning to erase another Penn threat.

Columbia stormed in front in the fifth inning with a four spot and took a 4-2 advantage. The Lions' first hits of the days came in the inning as they tallied four. Eric Jeon ripped an RBI single to plate the first run but was thrown out trying to advance on the throw. After a Cole Hage walk, Griffin Palfrey and Skye Selinsky smacked run-scoring hits.

Wyatt Henseler brought the Lions lead within one with a two-out solo home run in the seventh. Two hitters later, Ryan Taylor drove in the tying run on a double down the left field line to make it a 4-4 game.
