Volleyball Drops Finale of Friar Classic to St. Peter's

Watts, Williamson named to All-Tournament Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Columbia volleyball team lost to St. Peter's in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-17)) on Saturday afternoon in the finale of the Friar Classic.

Hailee Watts and Julianna Williamson were both named to the Friar Classic All-Tournament Team, recognizing their performances from the entire weekend.

In the first set, the Lions took an early 7-2 lead behind two kills from Watts, and one kill each from Williamson, Amanda Holsen, and Eva Atkins. That lead stood all the way to 23-20, but the Peacocks rattled off five straight points to come from behind and win the first set.

Set two began with both teams trading rallies until another kill from Watts evened things up at 16-16. Once again, it was St. Peter's going on a massive run late in the set, this time a 7-1 run, to take a 23-17 lead. The Lions cut the deficit as low as three points thanks to an Atkins kill and a block from Holsen and Maria Happ, but the Peacocks held on to go up 2-0.

St. Peter's did not let its foot off the gas in the third set. After taking a slight 6-5 lead, the Peacocks once again went on a massive run, this time an 11-1 run, to gain control of the set and match for good. Columbia used a 7-0 run of its own sparked by a kill from Harper Justema to get back into it, but it would be too little too late. St. Peter's held on to win 25-17 to ice the match.

Watts once again led the Lions with nine kills and 11 digs, narrowly missing out on another double-double. Williamson chipped in seven kills, while Atkins added six kills.

Next weekend, the Lions will participate in the Jacksonville Invitational, hosted by the Dolphins in Florida. Columbia will play its first game against Bethune Cookman on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
