Men's & Women's Soccer, Women's Golf, Cross Country and Volleyball all in action away from home this weekend
NEW YORK — Columbia men's soccer, women's soccer, cross country, volleyball, and women's golf are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Wisconsin women's cross country team hosts the annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on Friday, Sept. 27. The women's "B" race is set to start at noon. while the women's "A" race will take place at 1:20 p.m. As is the case every year, the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational houses some of the top teams in the nation—welcoming 15 ranked opponents on the women's side. Oregon and Washington, two new members of the revised 18-team Big Ten, highlight the top programs making their way to Wisconsin, ranked fourth and fifth respectively. The Lions should be fresh, coming off a week of and a great performance two weeks ago at the Spiked Shoe Invitational. Only the women will be competing, the men have one more weekend off.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The Lions complete the fall portion of their schedule this Saturday and Sunday at the Princeton Invitational. The tournament is scheduled for 36 holes of continuous play on Saturday, followed by the final round on Sunday. Twelve teams are in this year's field, which include Columbia, host Princeton, Dartmouth, FDU, Penn, Boston U., Seton Hall, Yale, UAlbany, Harvard, Georgetown and St. John's. So far, the Lions have been led by the play of their trio of first-years, Sarah Shao, Christine Chang and Emily Luo. Shao and Chang carry matching 75.67 stroke averages, just ahead of Luo at 76.17. Returners Emma Shen (77.50) and Yoko Tai (78.67) have each also started Columbia's first two tournaments of the season. Tai is coming off a 2023-24 season in which she posted two top 10s, five top 25s and was a Second Team All-Ivy League honoree.
VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball opens up Ivy League play this weekend on the road in Ithaca against Cornell. After being picked fifth in the Ivy League preseason poll, the Big Red are 6-3 in 2024, most recently picking up wins over Le Moyne and Binghamton, but losing to Syracuse in four sets. Last year, the Lions earned their sole Ivy win against Cornell on in the Big Red's home gym so they will be looking to run it back once again in 2024. Columbia is fresh off a solid showing at the Jacksonville Invite, picking up an impressive win over Bethune Cookman after being down 0-2. Hailee Watts is a player to watch, coming off a big weekend and leading the Lions with 98 kills on the year.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Women's soccer is on the road to kick off Ivy League action this weekend against Penn. First kick from Philadelphia is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday. Columbia enters the contest with a 2-3-3 overall record after posting a dominant 4-0 win against Providence last Friday. Sophia Cavaliere, Charlyse Berry, Nata Ramirez and Angel Akanyirige each found the net in the win. Penn enters the start of conference action with a 1-5-3 overall mark. The Quakers come into the weekend after earning their first win of the season last week against Temple, 4-0. Columbia is winless on the road this season against a tough schedule, but will be looking for its first road victory Saturday to start the Ivy League slate.

The men's soccer team opens the 2024 Ivy League season on the road at No. 20 Penn (5-1-1). The Quakers handed No. 1 Pitt what remains their only loss of the season back on September 1 and started the year a perfect 4-0-0. Penn is 1-1-1 over their last three matches entering league play, falling at VCU, 2-0, defeating Manhattan, 1-0, and drawing Villanova, 2-2, on Tuesday. Stas Korzeniowski leads the team and is tied for the Ivy League lead with five goals scored. He's also tied for the league lead in points with 11. Columbia (0-6-0) will be looking to turn things around from the non-conference season, getting outscored 10-1 so far to this point. Penn is 2-0-2 against the Lions in the last four series meetings. Columbia hopes to end that streak with its first series win since 2018.
