Emily MacDonald and Ashley Hu set new Cornell pool records

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Columbia women's swimming and diving team earned its first victory of the 2024-25 campaign on Thursday evening, defeating the Cornell Big Red by a score of 178-122 in upstate New York.

"We came to Ithaca determined to give a great effort," Head Coach Diana Caskey said. "Everyone stepped up and we dominated the meet from start to finish. It was a great showing and the coaches are super proud of our women!"

Emily MacDonald and Ashley Hu shined brightest for the Lions.

MacDonald won three events, including the 100 free where she set a new Cornell pool record with a time of 49.51. She also won the 50 free (22.81) and 200 free (1:49.33).

Hu also set a new Cornell pool record, winning the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.38. Hu would also win the 200 breast with a time of 2:15.97.

Elsewhere, in the first event of the day, the Lions' 200 medley relay squad consisting of Julia Unas, Hu, Anthea Wong, and Sally Ma kicked things off with a win thanks to a time of 1:47.76.

In the first individual event of the afternoon, Lindsay Orringher took first place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:04.61.

Jilly MacNamara won her first event at Columbia, placing first in the 100 back with a time of 55.57.

In addition, Allison Martin won the 200 fly with a time of 2:00.53 and Meredith Stewart won the 500 free with a time of 4:57.09.

For the divers, Macy Pine was excellent yet again. First, she won the 3m dive with a score of 279.98, and then would go on to win the 1m dive with a score of 275.70.

"Lady Lion divers were very solid today," Head Diving Coach Scott Donie said. "It's a tough task to turn it around after our home meet on Tuesday with a long bus ride in between and perform at this level. All the hard work is really showing."

Columbia will close out the 2024-25 regular season next Saturday against Dartmouth in New Hampshire. The meet will begin at 11 a.m.
