Volleyball, Field Hockey, Men's Soccer featured in this week's edition

NEW YORK — Columbia volleyball, field hockey, men's soccer are featured in this week's edition of Lions on the Road. Every week, GoColumbiaLions.com will be using "Lions on the Road" to preview that week's upcoming games and events happening off campus.

Volleyball

The Columbia volleyball team wraps up a five-match road trip this weekend when the Lions take on Harvard and Dartmouth. Friday's match against the Crimson is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday's match against the Big Green is scheduled for a 5 p.m. first serve. Columbia enters this weekend with an overall record of 2-16. Last time out, the Lions fell in four sets on the road to Cornell. In the match, first-year outside hitter Elena Maynulet finished with a team-high 11 kills, which was her ninth match with 10 or more kills this season. She is 22 kills shy of becoming the first first-year player with 200 or more kills since Emily Teehen notched 265 kills in 2018. Other milestones on the horizon, senior setter Ruby van der Heide is 24 assists shy of 1,600 for her career.

Field Hockey

The Lions (7-7, 1-5) are coming off a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart last Sunday on Senior Day. Jacinta Solari Etcheberry leads the team in goals (six), points (17), and shots on goal (20). Goalkeeper Margot Houle has made 96 saves on the season and has recorded two shutouts in the cage. Columbia concludes the regular season on Saturday and goes for its first win against the Tigers since 2014. The Lions are 1-3 this year against ranked opponents.

Men's Soccer

Riding two straight victories, the men's soccer team (3-6-4, 1-3-1 Ivy) plays another pivotal Ivy League match this Saturday at Brown (5-6-2, 1-3-1 Ivy). Both Columbia and Brown are tied for fifth in the league standings, just two points behind Dartmouth for the fourth and final qualifying spot to this year's Ivy League Tournament. The Lions enter the contest hot, having scored a combined eight goals in their last two matches. On Tuesday, they defeated Fordham, 5-1, behind Stepan Kapranov's team-leading fourth goal of the season, followed by the first collegiate goals for sophomore Peter Chang, senior Ryan Yang, sophomore Luke Zielinski and sophomore Will Carnoy. It was Columbia's most goal in a match since defeating Harvard, 6-1, in 2019. Speaking of Harvard, Columbia earned a 3-1 victory over the Crimson last Saturday at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. Senior Brandon Newman and sophomore Will Case scored their first collegiate goals, while Kapranov added the third. Case, who assisted Newman's goal, went on to be named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his collegiate career.
