NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Columbia men's soccer team could not solve the Yale Bulldogs, falling on the road, 1-0, Saturday night at Reese Stadium.
Columbia (1-4-3, 0-1-1 Ivy) fired off 18 shots, but only three of them came on goal. Meanwhile, Yale (1-6-2, 1-1-0 Ivy) scored on a 58th-minute goal by Joseph Faroux and held on for its first win of the season.
The Lions had multiple good looks within the first 20 minutes of the game.
Jack McDaid chipped a ball through to the far side of the box that
Will Case fired high from close range. A few minutes later, a Yale defender fell down in his own half to create a golden two-on-one opportunity for the Lions. Again, it was
Jack McDaid on the ball, who played it across to wide-open
Luke Zielinski. Unfortunately, the left-footed shot by the sophomore sailed wide of the left post.
It wasn't just Columbia that could have scored in the opening half. In between Columbia's opportunities came a few good looks for Yale that required the help of senior goalkeeper
Dean Kelliher. He made a great stop when Angelo Zhu had him one-on-one from inside the box, and another just minutes later on a shot from Joseph Farouz. Kelliher made a career-high seven saves on the evening.
The Lions possessed the ball for the majority of the final 15 minutes of the half, as Yale almost seemed willing to sit back and let the Lions try and break them down. Columbia slipped a few balls inside but never found an opportunity as good as some of their chances earlier in the half.
Another great defensive sequence came in the 56th minute with the game still 0-0. A ball played over the top found Farouz in close. Kelliher closed the gap and made an initial save with his right foot. Farouz regained control, got around Kelliher and sent a rolling shot toward goal. Fortunately, junior captain
Jackson ten Oever was in position to clear it off the line.
Farouz and Yale broke through two minutes later off a set piece. Sven Meacham sent a free kick form just outside the center circle into the right half of the penalty area. Owen Bull headed it across the box and Farouz came flying in, driving home the goal with his head.
Columbia had a hard time getting out of its own half following the goal. They finally did with less than 20 minutes remaining and spent the remainder of the game trying to level the score.
Andres Garcia had one of the better looks, chesting a ball down in the box and driving a hard shot toward goal that sailed high. The closest chance later came off the head of
Stepan Kapranov, also sailing just over the bar.
The Lions return home for their next Ivy League match on Saturday, October 11, against Dartmouth (1-4-3, 0-2-0 Ivy). Kickoff at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
