PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Columbia men's soccer team was defeated in an Ivy League contest at Brown, 1-0, late Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
With the result, Columbia drops to 3-7-4 with a 1-4-1 mark in Ivy League competition. The result also eliminates the Lions from Ivy League Tournament contention.
Brown (6-6-2, 2-3-1 Ivy) scored the game's only goal in the 16th minute. It stemmed from a corner that Stistrup Petersen sent into the box. Columbia goalkeeper
Alexander O'Brien punched the inswinger away but only as far as Greyson Mitchell just outside the area. Michell headed the ball back toward goal and Stefano D'Agostini was there to back-heel it past O'Brien.
The officials reviewed the goal for potential offside. While two Brown players were in an offside position, the officials deemed that those players did not interfere with the play.
The Lions only got off two shots in the first half. Their closest look came three minutes before the Brown goal.
Christoph Kuttner was played through and challenged the keeper from 10 yards. His shot from the top-left corner was stopped and sent over the end line. However, the linesman had his flag up for offside on the potential goal.
It felt like the Lions had over 80 or 90 percent of the ball in the second half. They had several chances to equalize, including a shot from close range by
Ryan Yang. It started from a ball sent ahead that
Luke Zielinski chased down near the end line. He crossed it low to the near post for Yang, whose touch squirted wide of the woodwork.
Brown had an opportunity to double the lead when
Jackson ten Oever was called for a foul in the box in the 72nd minute. Jamin Gogo Peters stepped up to take the penalty but slammed it off the left post. The follow-up shot sailed high.
Columbia kept putting chances through but could not find the back of the net.
The Lions conclude the regular season at home next Saturday, hosting No. 24 Cornell (11-2-2, 4-1-1 Ivy). Kickoff for Senior Day at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 5 p.m.
