Page ties program record with eight steals
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's basketball team shook off Binghamton's third-quarter comeback effort to take down the Bearcats, 73-60, on Monday night from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
All five Columbia starters scored in double figures. Senior Perri Page nearly posted a triple-double, going for 13 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high eight steals en route to victory. Her eight steals tied for the program record, last accomplished by Jaida Patrick at Old Dominion in the 2022 WNIT. Fellow senior Susie Rafiu led the Lions in scoring with 14 points. Sophomore Marija Avlijas matched career-bests with 12 points and six assists. Mia Broom and Riley Weiss had 10 points apiece.
"It's all about defense for us. We try to take pride in getting stops and finding our identity on defense," Page told Lance Medow in her postgame interview on SNY." Obviously, we can score the ball a little bit, and we did that well tonight, but it's just about getting stops."
Columbia (3-2) concluded a three-game homestand with Monday's win. The Lions outperformed Binghamton (3-3) in nearly every non-shooting stat, with a glaring 18-2 advantage in steals, a 38-33 edge on the glass, including 21-12 in offensive rebounds, and a dominant 52-32 performance in points scored in the paint.
"That was the game, honestly, winning the toughness battle," Page added. "Winning those 50-50 balls, outrebounding them, that was the game. We had some big lapses where [Binghamton] was the tougher team tonight … We had to grit out the game but we got the win."
The Lions zipped to a 24-14 start, trapping Binghamton's ball handlers and jumping into the passing lanes whenever they tried to move up the court. Columbia continued to take advantage down low, scoring 34 first-half points in the paint. They ended the half on an 8-0 run to lead 40-26 at the break.
The Bearcats bounced back with their best quarter by far, shooting 11-of-18 from the field and outscoring Columbia 28-16 in the third. They went on a 12-3 run early on to get back in the game. Midway through the quarter, the Bearcats kicked off a 14-2 run that ultimately tied the game at 54 with 1:30 to go in the period. After Avlijas knocked down a jumper, Columbia entered the final period clinging to a two-point lead.
With their backs against the wall, the Lions fired off with an 8-0 run to start the fourth and build separation. Up eight with three minutes to go, Mia Broom scored just before the shot clock expired to push the Lions further ahead. On the next play, Avlijas grabbed a steal and pulled up for a mid-range jumper that bounced in her favor. Page made another layup following a missed Binghamton free throw, putting Columbia back in front by 14 with 1:30 to go, and sealing the deal.
Next up for the Lions is the Cancun Challenge. Columbia will play three games in three days over the Thanksgiving Weekend, Nov. 27-29, facing off against Kansas State, South Dakota State and UNC.
