Lions complete season-opening road trip 2-0
ATHENS, Ohio – Columbia women's basketball started the second half on a 17-0 run and pulled away from Ohio, 92-74, Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The Lions led by as many as 30.
Columbia (2-0) was led by a trio of double-figure scorers. Junior Riley Weiss scored a game-high 18 points, senior Susie Rafiu matched her career-high with 16, and senior Perri Page had 13 points and nine boards. Rafiu stuffed the stat sheet with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
The Lions put up 31 third-quarter points. The 17-0 run spanned the quarter's opening five-and-a-half minutes. Fliss Henderson scored six straight on the front end, draining a trey and following with an old-fashioned 3-point play on the next possession. The lead expanded to 20 for the first time on two Marija Avlijas free throws. The Serbian later scored a second-chance bucket at the 4:27 mark to complete the run and make it a 27-point game.
Sophomore Maria Arrebola's third triple of the day turned it into a laugher, ballooning the lead to 30 with 1:06 left in the period.
"Just taking away confidence and comfort. We definitely gave them a lot of easy scores [in the first half] and let them get into what they wanted to get into," said Page when asked about what changed in the second half. "The biggest thing for us was to string stops together collectively as a unit."
Columbia dominated the glass, ending the game with a 49-24 advantage, including 23-9 on the offensive end. The Bobcats simply could not keep up, surrendering 30 second-chance points and allowing the Lions to score 40 in the paint. Mia Broom secured a career-high 10 rebounds, seven of which were offensive.
The Lions went down 9-3 at the start but scored the next six courtesy of Rafiu and Page to tie things back up. Threes by Arrebola and Broom put Columbia up 15-11. The Lions never trailed again.
After being held scoreless in the first quarter, Weiss turned it on in the second. She got on the board with two free throws, connected on a 4-point play from the corner and went on to score 10 consecutive Columbia points. Another trey at the 1:30 mark completed her 13-point frame. Columbia led by 10 at halftime.
Ohio's Bella Ranallo had 18 points to match Weiss's game-high. Asiah Baxter scored 16 and Aliah McWhorter had 10 to round out the Bobcats in double figures.
Columbia returns to New York City to prepare for its home opener against No. 24 Richmond on Saturday, November 15. Tip-off from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
When asked about returning home, Page added, "Our community at Columbia is great. We love the atmosphere that we play in, and I'm just excited to get back there."
