Page registers fourth career double-double
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Perri Page connected on a game-winning layup in the final second to lift the Columbia women's basketball team over Seton Hall, 54-53, Tuesday night at Walsh Gymnasium.
Seton Hall (5-3) had the ball leading by a point with a 10-second differential between game and shot clock. Jada Eads put up a shot with about 12 seconds left that bounced off the rim and deflected out of bounds. The referees signaled for Columbia ball, which the Pirates appealed. The decision was upheld upon video review.
The Lions called a timeout and advanced the ball in front of their own bench with 8.6 seconds on the clock. Fliss Henderson got the ball to Page on the left wing, who held it for a moment before turning and driving toward the basket. Her lay-in dropped through with less than a second remaining, and the Lions (7-4) survived a desperation heave to win it.
"We play together. That's what really won this game," said Page in her postgame interview on ESPN+. "And the toughness battle. Fliss Henderson was getting every single board there was. That's really what got us this game, being the tougher team, getting those 50-50 balls and just gutting it out,"
Page registered her second double-double of the season, going for a team-high 15 points and game-high 10 rebounds. Fliss Henderson and Riley Weiss scored 10 points apiece. Henderson matched a career-high with nine rebounds.
The win was Columbia's seventh in its last eight games against BIG EAST opponents. The Lions are now 11-2 against the conference in the Megan Griffith head-coaching era.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Tony [Bozzella]. This is a rivalry that I've really enjoyed that organically has happened," Griffith said. "I just know they are going to bring it … and they have a nice basketball team. We both are trying to hit our stride right now, which you can see, we're sort of growing through."
Savannah Catalon and Jada Eads combined for 31 of Seton Hall's 53 points. Mariana Valenzuela and Jordana Codio made life difficult on the glass for Columbia, going for 10 boards apiece. The Pirates outrebounded the Lions, 45-36, including 16-10 on the offensive end. However, Columbia outscored SHU, 10-4, in second-chance points.
Columbia fell behind by 11 in the first quarter but ended it on a 10-0 run to pull within a point heading to the second. Page had nine points in the quarter, including five straight over the last 1:41.
Marija Avlijas put the Lions back in front on a triple early in the second quarter. However, the lead was short-lived. Seton Hall scored the next six and led the rest of the half, taking a four-point lead into the locker rooms.
Seton Hall regained a 10-point lead early in the third quarter but the Lions responded. After not scoring the entire first half, Riley Weiss hit a tough jumper to get in the scoring column. She then scored five straight to close the quarter, including her first 3-pointer of the night in the final minute.
The Lions cut the lead to a single point on four different occasions in the final period without retaking the lead. Ultimately, their defense led to the victory, holding Seton Hall to 2-for-15 from the field in the fourth quarter, allowing Page the opportunity to win it.
The Lions have a 10-day break from games for exams. They return to action next Saturday, December 20, against UTSA (3-5). Opening tip from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
