NEW YORK – Harvard rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Columbia women's basketball, 60-54, Sunday afternoon at a sold-out Levien Gymnasium. The defeat snapped Columbia's program-record-tying 11-game winning streak.
Columbia (18-5, 9-1 Ivy) remains in first place in the Ivy League standings but now shares that lead with Princeton. The Lions and Tigers will meet at Princeton this Saturday. Harvard (19-3, 8-2) is alone in third.
"We started playing 'iso' ball. We started playing like [Harvard], honestly," Columbia head coach
Megan Griffith told reporters postgame. "That's what they do … We don't do that. We don't play one-on-one, that's not our style, and they played better than us today."
The Lions were limited to 16 first-half points on 18-percent shooting but played well enough defensively to trail by just three at the intermission. They then came out with a 12-0 run to start the second half, grabbing their largest lead, 28-19, on
Riley Weiss's second trey of the run. Columbia took a 43-37 lead to the fourth.
Harvard took back the lead with a 9-0 start to the final quarter. The Crimson outscored the Lions 23-11 during the period and outrebounded them 21-14 in the second half to hold off a comeback. The Lions were within four with 36 seconds left but never managed to get any closer.
"I think we just went away from our sets and what we do," senior
Kitty Henderson said, "We weren't playing Columbia basketball – we were going one-on-one and I think we did miss a lot of easy looks. I think we let that get to our heads."
Henderson led the scoring for Columbia, recording 15 points in an afternoon which also saw her tie the program's career assists record (456). She now shares that spot Charlene Schuessler (1986-90).
Cecelia Collins put up 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
Riley Weiss contributed 12 points.
Harmoni Turner recorded 22 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and four steals in the winning effort. Saniyah Glenn-Bello and Abigail Wright scored 12 points apiece.
Defense reigned supreme in a low-scoring first half for both teams. The Lions started 0-for-8 from the floor with four turnovers before
Perri Page sank the first field goal with 3:37 left in the period. Still, the Lions only trailed by four midway through the period and went into the second down five.
The two teams combined for just 12 points in a second quarter also dominated by defense. Columbia had the better of it, trimming the deficit to three, 19-16, at halftime.
The Lions went on their run to take their first lead at the beginning of the third quarter. Weiss scored the first bucket of the second half with a three delivered to her by Collins, tying the game. Then, Collins knocked down a three of her own to ignite the sellout crowd. Henderson finished an and-1 layup and Weiss knocked down another three to cap off the 12-0 burst. In the final seconds of the third quarter,
Mia Broom knocked down a contested three off a dime from Collins to give Columbia a 43-37 lead heading into the final 10.
Columbia now prepares for a first-place battle with Princeton on Saturday. The opening tip at Jadwin Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game can be watched live on ESPN+.
