Long Island native scored a career-high 34 in pivotal win at Princeton
PRINCETON, N.J. – Following a career performance in Saturday's 64-60 victory at Princeton, Columbia's Riley Weiss has been named Ivy League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for a third time this season. The league office announced its weekly awards Monday afternoon.
In what was Columbia's biggest game of the season to this point, Weiss was nothing short of spectacular. The sophomore from Long Island dropped a career-high 34 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter to rally the Lions to victory. Entering the final period trailing by six, Columbia went on a 13-0 run to take a 51-44 lead. Weiss netted the final 10 points of that run, starting with a three to tie it and later going coast-to-coast for an emphatic and-one to completely shift the momentum. Weiss ended the night 11-for-21 from the field, 5-of-11 from deep and a perfect 7-for-7 at the foul line, adding three rebounds, a pair of assists and a pair of steals. All seven of those free throw attempts came in the fourth quarter, where the Lions went 11-for-11 as a team to ice away their first regular-season sweep against Princeton since 2008. It also ended Princeton's 30-game home winning streak, which was the longest active streak in the country.
Weiss has now been named Ivy League Player of the Week three times in the past month (Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 24). She ranks among the top 50 nationally in scoring at 18.3 points per game, is No. 5 in the NCAA in 3-pointers made per game (3.17) and No. 15 in total threes (76). She also leads the Ivy League and ranks top 75 nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.384).
Kitty Henderson was named to this week's Ivy League Honor Roll. The senior from Australia went for 14 points, four steals, three assists, three rebounds and a block in Saturday's victory. She also became Columbia's all-time leader in career assists, breaking the former record of 456 held by Charlene Schuessler (1986-90) that had stood for 35 years
Saturday's win gave Columbia (19-5, 10-1 Ivy) sole possession of first place in the Ivy League standings – the Lions have a one-game lead over both Princeton (9-2) and Harvard (9-2). All eight Ivy teams have three games remaining in the regular season. The Lions will play each of them at home.
Columbia (19-5, 10-1 Ivy) plays an Ivy League back-to-back at Levien Gymnasium this Friday and Saturday against Brown (10-14, 4-7 Ivy) and Yale (3-21, 2-9 Ivy). The weekend slate begins Friday against the Bears at 4 p.m.
