(11) Columbia to face (11) Washington in First Four Thursday
INDIANAPOLIS — The Columbia women's basketball team is headed back to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament for the second straight year. The Lions will face Washington in the First Four on Thursday, March 20, at Carmichael Arena on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
Columbia (23-6) received a No. 11 seed in the Birmingham 2 Regional. The winner between Columbia and 11th-seeded Washington (19-13) will face No. 6 seed West Virginia (24-7) on Saturday in the First Round.
As outright regular-season champions of the Ivy League, Columbia earned an at-large berth into the field. The Ivy League got three teams into this year's NCAA field for the first time in the conference's history.
The Lions have won three consecutive Ivy League Regular Season Championships and tied a program record with 11 consecutive wins from December 21-February 14. Columbia picked up five wins over teams in this year's NCAA Tournament field and advanced to the Ivy League Tournament Championship Game for the third time in the last four years.
Thursday's game will be the first all-time meeting between Columbia and Washington.
