Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Brown to Open Ivy League Play

The Lions rally to comeback in game one; dominate game two

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball won their Ivy League and home opener over Brown, 13-9, before defeating the Bears, 19-6, in game two on Saturday at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

The Lions (6-11, 2-0) and Bears (2-13, 0-2) wrap up the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Game 1 Recap

Brown scored a run on a bases-loaded walk and a Christian Butera solo home run to take an early 2-0 lead after three innings. A four-run top of the fourth, highlighted by solo homers from Brandon Chang and Logan Meusy, gave the Bears a commanding 6-0 lead.

Columbia answered right back with seven runs of its own in the bottom half of the fourth. All with two outs, the Lions recorded four straight run-scoring singles before Sam Miller belted a three-run homer to center field to give Columbia a 7-6 lead.

Two innings later, the Bears retook the lead after DJ Dillehay mashed a two-run home run. Brown held firm until the bottom of the seventh when the Lions hung another crooked number on the Bears.

Leading off the bottom of the seventh, Miller destroyed a solo home run to left to tie the game at 8-8. Three batters later, Kyle Corso delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly to put the Lions up 9-8. Columbia would tack on four more insurance runs on RBI singles by Owen Estabrook, Hunter Snyder, and Miller as the Lions batted around in the seventh.

Although Gunner Boree homered in the eighth, Columbia would hold Brown there. Alex Sotiropoulos earned his second win in relief, tossing three innings and striking out two batters.

Game 2 Recap

Columbia notched two runs in the bottom of the first on an Anton Lazits sacrifice fly and Jack Kail RBI single to take an early lead. Brown answered right back with two runs. Mark Henson homered to the opposite field and Miles Newsome doubled to even the score at 2-2.

The Lions retook the lead in the bottom of the third on a Cole Fellows RBI single, but the Bears answered right back as Christian Butera homered for the second time today.

In the bottom of the fourth, Columbia began to bludgeon Brown pitching, scoring eleven runs and homering four times. Anthony Temesvary recorded his first collegiate home run – a two-run shot – and later followed that blast up with a three-run shot as Columbia batted around. Fellows launched a three-run shot, and Kail belted a two-run homer as Columbia put up double digits.

In the top of the sixth, Brown scratched across two runs on Meusy's second bomb of the day and a Gunner Boree run-scoring double. In the bottom half, Columbia added five more runs, highlighted by RBI doubles by Miller and Griffin Palfrey.

The Bears answered back in the top of the seventh when DJ Dillehay homered for the second time today. That would be the final time Brown scored.

Jagger Edwards tossed five and two-thirds innings to earn the win. He struck out three batters.
