The Lions remain in second place in the team standings
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Columbia fencing remains in second place after a strong day by the women, who opened up the competition on Saturday. The Lions trail first-place Notre Dame by 10 points heading into the final day of action.
Five women are either sitting or tied for semifinal position with two more preliminary rounds to go.
Zander Rhodes won 14-of-15 bouts to sit atop the individual standings in foil. First-year Carolina Stutchbury also had a good start, posting an 11-4 record and is currently in fourth place with a +15 advantage in indicator to hold on to the last semifinal slot.
In sabre, Chloe Gouhin and Tamar Gordon each went 11-4. Gouhin holds a slight edge in the indicator tiebreak over Gordon, who are ranked No. 4 and 5.
Tierna Oxenreider is in good position to head back to the championship rounds after a 10-5 day in epee. She is in fifth place, but only trails Princeton's Leehi Pirkowski by two in the indicator for fourth. Sumin Lee went 5-10 and is in 19th place.
The men's competition wraps up on Friday, March 21, with two more round-robin pools to determine the top four finishers in each discipline beginning at 9 a.m. The top four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place. The semifinals begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
