Lacrosse Drops Ivy Contest to #15 Penn

Becker, Brogan tally three points each

NEW YORK – The Columbia lacrosse team dropped an Ivy League contest to #15 Penn, 18-7, on Saturday afternoon at Robert K. Kraft Field.

With the loss, Columbia drops to 3-7 on the season, with an 0-3 record in Ivy League games. Meanwhile, Penn improves to 5-3 and remains perfect in conference play at 2-0.

Despite the final score, today was about more than just lacrosse. For the lacrosse team's annual alumnae game and One Love game, the program paid tribute to Kathleen Roskot, the Columbia lacrosse star who tragically lost her life 25 years ago.

At halftime, the Lions welcomed nine members of Kathleen's family, including her mother and father, and presented them with a framed jersey of Kathleen's #13. The hope is that this jersey will remind them that Columbia Lacrosse will always be part of their family, as their family will always be a part of Columbia Lacrosse.

The game got off to a great start, with Anna Becker and Maddie Brogan firing back-to-back goals to give the Lions an early 2-0 lead. However, Penn had a quick answer, using a 3-0 run to take its first lead of the game. Brogan found the back of the net for a second time to tie the game at 3-3, sending the game into the second quarter at a stalemate.

Becker started the second quarter just like she did the first, with a goal to put Columbia back in front. The Quakers would respond with six straight goals, before Serena Hong ended the run with her third goal of the year. Penn took a 9-5 lead into the break.

Penn held the Lions scoreless in the third quarter, and used three goals to take a 12-5 lead. Two consecutive goals 30 seconds apart from Michelle Zhai and Cecelia Messner cut into that lead, but the Quakers would ultimately hold on to win 18-7.

Brogan and Becker paced the Lions offense with two goals and one assist each. Cordelia Flemming had a team-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Dani Falcone led Columbia with five draw controls. Simone Koryszewski matched her season-high with 14 saves.

Next up, the Lions will close out their four-game homestand with their final non-conference game of the season against Wagner. First draw is set for 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Kraft Field.
