Lions named USBWA Team of the Week
NEW YORK – Columbia women's basketball's Kitty Henderson added to her player-of-the-week honors by picking up two national recognitions this week. The senior point guard was named an Honorable Mention Player of the Week by the Associated Press. NCAA.com named Henderson to its Starting Lineup of the Week.
Columbia (21-5, 12-1 Ivy) was also named the Team of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). The distinction comes following a pair of victories over Brown and Yale, in which seniors Henderson and Cecelia Collins posted back-to-back triple doubles. According to Stats Perform, it's only the second time that two different players from the same school had triple-doubles in back-to-back games.
Henderson became the second Lion in program history to record a triple-double, doing so with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in Friday's, 70-44, victory against Brown. She was 8-of-15 (.533) shooting on the day and added four steals with just one turnover. According to Stats Perform, Henderson and Kaitlyn Davis '23CC are the only two Division I women's basketball players this century to have exactly 19 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, four steals and one turnover in a game.
A native of the Sydney suburb of North Curl Curl, Australia, Henderson had nine points, eight boards and three assists in Saturday's win over Yale. Senior teammate Cecelia Collins recorded a triple double (16 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) in that game, making Henderson and Collins just the second set of teammates to record triple-doubles in back-to-back games in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball history.
For the week, Henderson averaged a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds with 6.5 assists and 2.0 steals. She shot 48 percent from the floor (12-25) and had an impressive 13.00 assist/turnover ratio.
Henderson climbed into the top 10 in Ivy League women's basketball history in career assists (472). At Columbia, she ranks No. 7 all-time in points (1,288), No. 8 in rebounds (674), No. 2 in steals (177), No. 2 in games played (121) and No. 2 in games started (112).
With their two wins over the weekend, Columbia clinched the No. 1 seed for Ivy Madness (March 14-15 – Providence, R.I.). The Lions have guaranteed no less than a share of their third straight Ivy League title. They'll host Cornell (7-19, 3-10 Ivy) at Levien Gymnasium this Saturday at 2 p.m. With a win, the Lions would be outright Ivy League regular season champions for the first time.
