NEW YORK – The Columbia women's tennis team swept Wagner, 7-0 on Friday afternoon inside the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
Columbia improves to 8-4 overall this season with the win. The Lions continue their dominance at home, where they're now 5-1. Columbia wraps up its four-match homestand against Rice on March 15.
Columbia claimed the doubles point early by winning the one and three doubles matches to take the lead over the Seahawks. The duo of
Malak El Allami and
Fatima Keita posted a 6-0 victory over Victoria Madail and Dariana Vera in the one spot.
Sophia Wang and
Emily Baek followed that up with a 6-1 win against Paula Ysabelle Uy and Claudia Lindsey in the three spot to secure the doubles point for the Lions.
Baek,
Salma Farhat, and
Winta Tewolde registered singles victories in straight sets to put the Lions up, 4-0. Baek rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Leah Ollivierre in the No. 6 singles for Columbia's first victory. Farhat followed that with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Jade Schoenfeld in the five spot. Tewolde clinched the Columbia win with a 6-1, 6-0 performance in the 4 singles against Lindsey.
Gayathri Krishnan, Keita, and Wang all won their singles matches in straight sets to finish the sweep of Wagner. Krishnan defeated Madail 6-2, 6-3 in the one singles. Keita rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniela Hernandez in the No. 2 spot. Capping off the strong team performance was Wang, who defeated Uy, 6-1, 6-3 in the three singles.
