Baseball Battles Back in 9-7 Loss at No. 5 Georgia on Sunday

The Lions nearly erased a 7-0 deficit in the series finale

ATHENS, Ga. — Columbia baseball fell to No. 5 Georgia, 9-7, in Sunday's series finale at Foley Field.

After falling behind 7-0 in the first inning, the Lions (1-9) scored six runs in the top of the third to make it a one-run game. Columbia got on the board with a Griffin Palfrey RBI single. Anton Lazits then blasted a three-run home run and two batters later, Sam Miller added a two-run shot.

Georgia (18-1) added a run in the sixth to boost its lead to 9-6. In the ninth inning, Jackson Brewer drew a lead-off walk and Palfrey doubled later on to set up runners at second and third base with one out. Lazits then drove in a run on a groundout, but Jack Kail grounded out to end the game.

Palfrey, Kail, and Hunter Snyder each had a pair of hits for the Lions. Palfrey also added 3.2 scoreless innings of relief work, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Columbia is back in action next weekend at San Diego. The Lions and Toreros will play a four-game set starting Friday at 9 p.m. ET from Fowler Park.
