ANNAPOLIS, Md. — First-year Sarah Shao shot a collegiate-low 1-under-par 71 and is the co-leader in the clubhouse at the Navy Spring Invitational. The first round of the 36-hole event was contested Saturday at the Naval Academy Golf Course.
Shao carded four birdies and three bogeys on the round. She posted back-to-back birdies at the par-5 third and 170-yard par-3 fourth to get to 2-under. Bogeys at the fifth and ninth had her even at the turn. The rookie fell back to 1-over with a bogey at the 160-yard 12th, but that would be her final blemish of the day. Shao took advantage of the 490-yard par-5 13th and birdied the closing par-4 18th for the first sub-par round of her collegiate career.
Shao and Boston's Amy Han are the co-leaders heading into Sunday's final round. Penn's Julie Shin is a shot back after shooting an even-par 72.
Columbia (+20) sits fifth, right in the middle of the nine-team field. They are just nine shots back of 18-hole leader Boston (+11). The Lions are 26 shots ahead of sixth-place Holy Cross (+46).
Sunday's final round will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Columbia will play alongside Dartmouth and Holy Cross. Shao begins her round at the fifth hole. Click here to access the live leaderboard, powered by clippd.
