Baseball Splits Twinbill With Cornell

Joe Sheets tossed a gem, three Lions go deep in game one victory over Big Red

NEW YORK  — Columbia baseball split a doubleheader with Cornell to open up a three-game series on Friday afternoon. The Lions (11-14, 6-2) earned a 10-1 victory in the opener and the Big Red (10-9, 5-3) came away with a 7-3 triumph in the nightcap.

The teams will wrap up the series on Saturday, April 5. Game time has been set for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.

Game 1 Recap
Joe Sheets was lights out, tossing 8.0 innings of four-hit ball to highlight the game one win. He allowed just one unearned run and struck out a pair to even his record at 2-2.

Errors by both teams led to the first three runs of the ball game. Owen Carlson plated Ryan Porter, who reached on a throwing miscue, with an RBI single in the second to open the scoring. An errant toss to second on a force play kept the inning alive for Columbia in the third, and a pair of sacrifice flies gave the Lions a 2-1 lead.

Sam Miller extended the cushion with a three-run blast, his Ivy League-leading ninth of the year, in the fourth inning. That would be all Sheets would need, who faced the minimum from the third inning on, but the Lions tacked on five more in the eighth to put the game away.

Owen Estabrook led things off with a solo shot for his second dinger in as many games and Griffin Palfrey delivered the big blow, a grand slam to cap the scoring.

Anton Lazits, Tage Vogler, Ben Fishel and Estabrook each notched two hits. Justin Bowman worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close things out.

Game 2 Recap
The Lions were held to just four hits in game two after a stellar outing from Big Red southpaw Huxley Holcombe. Holcombe went 7.2 innings and struck out seven to pick up the win.

Cornell put up a three-spot in the top of the first and never looked back. Porter knocked in a pair with a double to extend the advantage to 5-0 before Columbia chipped away in the bottom of the frame.

With two runners in scoring position, Cole Fellows delivered a two-run single to trim the deficit to three.

The Big Red loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth, but the Lions limited the damage to one after inducing a double play. The score remained 6-2 until the seventh when Kevin Hager doubled and advanced to third after an infield single. William Jaun then notched an RBI groundout to push the margin to five.

Columbia threatened in the eighth after a pair of walks set the table for Fellows, who drive in his third run of the game with a base hit to finish Holcombe's day. After the Cornell call to the bullpen Lazits hit a bullet to short, but Hager came up with a diving grab to prevent the Lions from inching closer.

Jagger Edwards took the decision (2-2) after lasting 3.2 innings. Baylor Hicks tossed 2.1 scoreless frames and WIll Harrigan fanned three in three innings out of the bullpen.
