Miller's Grand Slam Caps Baseball's 13-9 Comeback Win Over Cornell

The Lions rallied from down five to pick up the series win.

NEW YORK  — Sam Miller delivered a walk-off grandslam to give the Columbia baseball team a come-from-behind 13-9 victory over Cornell on Saturday. The Lions (12-14, 7-2) trailed by as many as five before scoring nine runs in the final three games to win the series and stay on top of the Ivy League standings.

Cornell struck first for the third straight game, plating two in the first to jump out to an early lead. A walk and double put two in scoring position, and the Big Red used a sac fly and RBI single from Caden Wildman to go on top, 2-0.

The top of the order for the Big Red went to work again in the third after John Quinlan and Owen Carlson notched back-to-back doubles to tack on an insurance run.

The Lions threatened in the third and fourth innings, but a pair of double plays stymied Columbia's chances to get on the board, but racked up four in the fifth to take the lead.

Columbia batted through the order and used RBI doubles from Pat Wade and Cole Fellows to knot things up at 3-3. With the bases loaded, Griffin Palfrey drew a walk to plate the go-ahead run. However, the Big Red answered in the top of the sixth.

Cornell notched a pair of singles to set up a two-out, three run blast on the first pitch Ryan Porter saw to put the Big Red back in front. In the seventh, an error led to three more runs to push the margin to 9-4.

Jack Kail put a dent into the deficit with a two-run bomb in the bottom of the frame, and Owen Estabrook followed suit with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-8 before the big rally in the ninth.

A hit batter and two walks loaded the bases with one out. Estabrook fell behind 0-2, but worked a walk to drive in the tying run. Cornell retired the next batter via strikeout before Miller sailed a 1-0 pitch over the scoreboard in left-center to empty the Columbia dugout.

Alex Sotiropoulos tossed 3.1 out of the bullpen to pick up the win (3-3). He allowed just one earned run on three hits and struck out four. Starter Thomas Santana struck out six in 5.2 innings.

Estabrook was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Fellows and Kail each notched a pair of hits in the win.

Columbia makes the short trip to Fordham for a midweek clash on Wednesday, April 9. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
