Lacrosse Beaten by #17 Brown

Becker and Falcone both score two goals

NEW YORK – The Columbia lacrosse team resumed Ivy League play on Saturday afternoon, squaring off against the #17 Brown Bears in Rhode Island. Brown used a huge first half to gain control of the game, and held on for a 19-5 victory.

With the loss, Columbia drops to 4-8 on the season and 0-4 in conference play. Meanwhile, Brown improves to 8-3 on the season and to 3-1 in Ivy League play.

Anna Becker and Dani Falcone led Columbia's attack with two goals each. Maddie Brogan added the fifth goal for the Lions. Michelle Zhai and Ellie Taylor each collected a point on an assist.

The Bears struck first, scoring the first two goals of the game, but Falcone had a quick answer finding the back of the net to cut the deficit back to one goal at the 6:42 mark of the first quarter.

From that point, Brown went on a huge run to close out the half. The Bears would score nine of the next 11 goals, and took an 11-3 lead into halftime.

The Bears opened the second half just like they started the second quarter, scoring two straight goals. Brogan responded with her sole goal of the afternoon at the 10:27 mark in the third quarter to make it a 13-4 game.

Brown, however, scored the next six goals before Becker scored with just 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter for Columbia's fifth goal of the contest. The Bears held on to win 19-5.

On the defensive end, goalie Simone Koryszewski started and picked up 16 saves. Noelle DeMarinis led the team with five draw controls, and Falcone added four of her own. Falcone led the team in both ground balls, with three, and caused turnovers, with two.

Columbia held its own in the draw control circle, losing that battle by a slim 14-13 margin. But Brown dominated in just about every other facet of the game, outshooting the Lions 47-25, as well as 35-13 in shots-on-goal. The Lions went 15-17 on clears while Brown went 17-20.

Next up, the Lions will continue Ivy League play in search of their first conference win in another road game against top 10 opponent Princeton. First draw is set for Saturday, April 12 at 4:00 p.m. in Princeton, N.J.
