VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova women's soccer earned its first win of 2025 on Sunday afternoon, holding on to defeat Columbia, 1-0, at Higgins Soccer Complex in Pennsylvania.
Hannah Curtin scored in the 39th minute off an assist from Amalia Cardo to give the Wildcats the lead. Curtin's tally was her first of the season and proved to be the game-winner.
Columbia (0-2-0) created several scoring opportunities, finishing with 10 shots and six on goal, but could not break through. Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney made one save in 90 minutes of action. Evelyn Javers continued her strong start to her rookie season, pacing the Lions with three shots, all on target.
Columbia had an excellent chance to equalize late in the contest after earning a free kick just outside the box in the 89th minute. Dema Elder took the kick, and fired on target but the shot was turned away by the Wildcats' goalkeeper Hannah Dickinson who had an excellent afternoon. The ensuing corner kick was well defended, and the Cats were able to escape trouble and run out the clock.
Villanova (1-2-0) generated seven shots, with Curtin leading the way. Dickinson recorded a season-high six saves to secure the shutout. Columbia held a slight edge in shots (10-7) and corners (3-2).
