Field Hockey Falls to Quinnipiac, 3-2

The Lions led 1-0; Comeback effort comes up short

HAMDEN, Conn. — Columbia field hockey was held off by Quinnipiac on Sunday, 3-2, at Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium.

The Lions (3-1) took an early 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the match when Mckenzie Bloom centered a pass to Sophia Abate, who found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.

The Bobcats (4-2) answered with three-straight goals, with each coming in the second, third, and fourth quarters. Izzy Kaczor scored for Columbia to get them within a goal with 2:41 remaining in the game. Jacinta Solari Etcheberry was credited with the assist.

Columbia received two penalty corners in the final two minutes, but couldn't convert on Quinnipiac goalkeeper Cristina Torres. With 1:46 to go, Lizzie Adams registered a shot, but it went wide of the cage. The Lions then failed to get a shot off on their final penalty corner of the day with 1:18 left.

Columbia was outshot, 14-9 (9-4 on goal). Lions goalkeeper Margot Houle made six saves. The Lions open Ivy League play at home on Friday vs. Cornell at 3 p.m.
