NEW YORK – The Columbia women's tennis team got the fall season started this weekend by hosting the Columbia Invitational at the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. Columbia won 25 of its 29 total matches over three days, including a 19-1 mark in singles play.
The Lions rolled through the first day of competition, playing matches against Stony Brook on Friday. The Lions won two of the three doubles matches and made quick work of the Seawolves in singles play, winning all seven matches - five of them in straight sets.
Columbia met Ivy League foe Cornell in action Saturday. The Big Red had the early momentum, winning two of the three doubles matches, but the Lions responded, winning six of the seven singles matches.
Columbia faced its final test Sunday with competition against Wagner. The Lions again shone in doubles action by winning all three matches. Singles play followed a similar script with the Lions winning all six singles matches - all of them in straight sets.
Margaret Hui looked particularly impressive, winning her match 6-0, 6-0.
The reigning Ivy League Player of the Year,
Gayathri Krishnan, set the tone for the Lions. The standout junior went 5-0 over the weekend, going 3-0 in doubles play and 2-0 in singles action. She won both of her singles matches in straight sets.
Fellow junior
Salma Farhat also had an impressive weekend, going 4-1 - including a 3-0 record in singles play.
Amber Yin also went 3-0 in singles play, including an impressive straight-sets victory in the No. 1 singles spot on Sunday.
Newcomers
Sabrina Lin, Michille Li, and
Margaret Hui also had impressive debuts for the Lions. The trio combined to go 8-1 in singles play. On Saturday, Li and Hui both rebounded to have a stellar third set to win their respective matches.
Columbia returns to action starting Thursday when they compete in the ITA All-Americans in Cary, N.C.
