Wrestling Takes Down Bears

Donny Pritzlaff notches 10th career victory at Columbia
NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team made quick work of visiting Morgan State, with the Lions defeating the Bears 44-4 on Friday evening at Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia (4-3) led 12-0 before the match even started due to forfeits from the Bears (0-11). In the end, the Lions won nine of the 10 matches.
After a win via forfeit at 125, Evin Gursoy got the momentum going in the Lions' favor with a 1-0 win via decision at 133. With the bout scoreless through two periods, Gursoy jumped out front with an escape from the down position to begin the final period.
At 141, Lorenzo Frezza notched the first of four wins by tech fall for the Lions. Early in the first, a 3-point takedown, followed by a 4-point near fall, had Frezza out 7-0. In the second, a quick escape and another 3-point take down made it 11-0. He carried that momentum into the third when another takedown made it 18-2 in favor of Frezza.
After a loss at 149, Columbia quickly regained the momentum at 157. Kai Owen finished with a 16-0 tech fall, a big second period being the catalyst in the win. Owen, the reigning Ivy League Wrestler of the Week, has now won 12 straight bouts.
Cesar Alvan notched his 74th career victory with a 5-2 decision. Alvan took the lead early in the first period with a 3-point takedown. An escape in the second and third made it 5-2 in the seniors' favor.
Nick Fine continues his impressive run. He entered tonight ranked ninth in the nation with tech-fall wins. He added to that, defeating Cortilius Vann via a 17-0, giving Fine his eighth tech fall of the year.
Joe Curtis notched his team-leading 12th fall of the year, defeating Sam Diggs in 44 seconds. Jack Wehmeyer closed out the match with a win via fall over Eric Washington, 21-4.
Friday's win for Columbia was the 10th for Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzlaff.
Columbia returns to action on Friday, January 23, when the Lions travel to Princeton, N.J., to take on the Tigers in the first Ivy League dual of the season. That match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
