Lions capture the doubles point, Gators win it in singles play.
NEW YORK – The 13th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team took an early lead by capturing the doubles point against Florida in the Championship Match of the ITA Kickoff Classic, hosted by the Lions at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. However, the Gators rallied in singles, winning four matches to defeat Columbia 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions' duo Nicolas Kotzen and Andrew Ena gave Columbia (2-2) an early edge, dispatching the sixth-ranked Gator pair Henry Jefferson and Tanapatt Nirundorn, 6-3, to begin doubles play. Kotzen and Ena broke serve twice in yet another strong doubles performance.
On court three, Thanaphat Boosarawongse and Aditya Govila clinched the doubles point for the Lions with a 6-4 win over Florida's Lorenzo Claverie and Andreas Timini. With the match tied 1-1, the Lions broke the Gators' serve to go up 2-1. They then held serve to take a commanding 3-1 lead and held on for the win.
After dropping the doubles point and trailing 1-0, Florida (2-0) shifted the match momentum by winning three consecutive singles matches, bringing the score to 3-1 in their favor. The Gators notched straight-sets wins on courts one, four and five.
On court two, Sachin Palta halved the deficit with a resilient 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lorenzo Claverie.
Florida ultimately sealed the match with a win in the final singles contest on court six.
The Lions return to action on Friday, January 30, when they take on Virginia in Charlottesville. That match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
