Lions set team record for fewest points allowed against Div. I opponent
NEW YORK – Riley Weiss scored a Columbia women's basketball record 40 points to lead the Lions in a cakewalk against Dartmouth, 89-32, Saturday afternoon from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Weiss's 40 points came on 15-of-23 shooting and a blazing 9-of-13 from deep, also breaking the program record for field goals made and tying the record for 3-pointers made. By halftime, she already had 26 points, which is the most ever scored by a Lion in a single half. She eclipsed her previous career-high of 34 with a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter. Then, sitting on 37 points midway through the final period, she connected from the right wing to become the first player in program history to score 40 in a single game. It broke the previous record of 39, set by Ellen Bossert in a game against New Rochelle way back on February 17, 1986.
"Obviously, it feels really good. I've just been trying to learn how to affect the game in more ways," Weiss told Lance Medow in her postgame interview on ESPN+. "That's been my challenge this year. Adjusting and continuing to grow in that."
While her 40 points were hard to ignore, Weiss also matched a career-high with eight rebounds and filled the rest of the stat sheet with three assists, two steals and a block.
"It's an accumulation of hard work," Lavine Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball Megan Griffith '07CC said. "For Riley, to see the ball go in, but play so freely … I'm really proud of her for how she has adjusted the last few games. It's a byproduct of the confidence she's built up over the last couple of weeks. It was great to see her do that, but there is so much more to come from her. She is just getting started."
Weiss bolstered an offense that shot 50.7 percent (35-69) on the afternoon and 50 percent (14-28) from long range. Sophomore Mia Broom was 3-of-8 from the perimeter and junior Fliss Henderson registered a game-high six assists.
For Dartmouth (9-9, 0-5 Ivy), Zeynep Ozel netted a team-high 14 points. The Big Green shot just 22 percent for the game and were 5-of-25 (.200) from the outside.
Weiss didn't take long to get going, connecting on her first shot of the game, one of her nine triples, to quickly make it 5-0. Dartmouth could never catch its breath, as Weiss hit another three, Perri Page connected from the outside, and then Weiss scored off a putback to make it 15-4 before the Big Green called their first timeout.
Weiss scored off a Nasi Simmons steal out of the timeout and just kept the pedal to the metal. She ended the first quarter with 14 points, Dartmouth had eight turnovers, and the Lions led 29-10.
A 19-4 second quarter ensued that saw Columbia go on a 17-0 run over the opening 7:30. Weiss hit 3-of-4 from deep in the period, outscoring Dartmouth as a team, 26-14, by herself at the break.
The only question left in the second half was how much Weiss would score. She added six points in the third quarter to get to 32. The record-breaking 3-point shot went through the net with 5:22 left in the fourth, making it an 82-30 game. Weiss then exited to a standing ovation.
"I wasn't sure what the record was," Weiss added. "But Coach G told me to go score 40 so…"
She did.
Columbia hits the road for an Ivy League back-to-back next weekend, taking on No. 20 Princeton Friday night, followed by Penn on Saturday. Friday night's game against the Tigers will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
