Women’s Tennis Takes Down Boilermakers

Lions Improve to 2-1 on the year
NEW YORK - The Columbia women's tennis (2-1) team defeated the visiting Purdue Boilermakers (2-2) with a 5-2 win on Saturday inside the Philip and Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
Columbia claimed the doubles point early with wins on courts one and two to take the lead over the Boilermakers. The duo of Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin cruised to victory over Ece Gencer and Ashlie Wilson, controlling the match and finishing with a final score of 6-2.
Malak El Allami and Amber Yin showed remarkable resilience to clinch the doubles point for the Lions, as the 1-seeded pair battled back from being down an early break to rally and claim the match with a 6-4 victory. Emily Baek and Sophia Wang held a 5-4 lead in their match at the time of completion.
Gayathri Krishnan, Margaret Hui, and Amber Yin registered singles victories in straight sets to seal the match at 4-0. Krishnan rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ida Clement in the No. 2 singles for Columbia's first victory. Hui followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Emmi Kolyszko in the 6 spot. Yin clinched the Columbia win with a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) performance in the No. 5 singles against Kathryn Wilson.
Sophia Wang won her singles match to close out the proceedings. Wang defeated Fatima Gutierrez 6-4, 7-5 on court three, capping off the strong team performance. Malak El Allami fell 6-4, 5-7, 9-11 in a hard-fought match against Ece Gencer at the No. 1 singles spot. No. 4 seed Emily Baek was defeated in a close match, 7-5, 4-6, 11-9, by Kayal Gownder, giving the Lions a 5-2 win on the day.
The Lions will look to continue their momentum in the ECAC Championship, February 6-8, in Princeton, NJ.
