Lions erase 17-point deficit in 28-27 win over Quakers
"Obviously, we're happy to come out of here with a win despite some of the penalties and situational football that transpired," Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football Jon Poppe said after the game. (I told our team earlier this week) that this has not been a kind place to Columbia football. I hope that continues to show people we're building something different than Columbia's ever been."
After a delayed start due to pending thunderstorms in the area, the Quakers (2-3, 0-2) punched first. Big plays propelled Penn to a 10-0 lead after scoring on its first drive and intercepting a pass to set up a 52-yard field goal with 6:01 left in the first quarter.
Chase Goodwin set up the Lions' first touchdown of the evening with a 45-yard strike down the left sideline to Beckett Robinson. Two plays later, Goodwin found Coleman in the right corner of the end zone to pull the Lions (4-1, 1-1) within three.
However, Penn quarterback Karson Siqueiros-Lasky opened the game 8-of-10 for 160 yards and marched the Quakers down the field for two more touchdowns to make it 24-7 before Columbia settled in.
The Lions' defense stiffened, intercepting two passes late in the second quarter and setting up two Columbia touchdowns, one from Griffin Johnson and another leaping grab from Coleman to cut the deficit to 24-21. With Penn threatening to score in the red zone again, Carter McCray picked off Siqueiros-Lasky at the 1 for the third forced turnover of the half.
In the second half, both offenses picked up chunk plays but couldn't find the end zone. The Quakers settled for a 28-yard Mason field goal with 9:19 left in the third.
Columbia marched down to the Penn 3, but a false start and an interception kept Penn ahead until the Lions broke through late in the fourth. Facing third and 6 on its 35, Goodwin connected with tight end Braden Dougherty, who made a terrific catch over the middle to extend the drive.
Hutch Crow also made a big third-down grab, and Goodwin put his head down to pick up 12 on a quarterback keeper, putting the Lions on the doorstep. Once again, Columbia turned to Coleman, who made it a hat trick to give the Lions their first lead of the night with 6:41 to play.
The dramatics did not end there. Galvin Goss picked off Siqueiros-Lasky a fourth time with under two minutes to play, but Columbia couldn't close it out. A three-and-out gave Penn the ball on their own 19-yard line.
The Quakers got a 26-yard pass to Isaac Lee to get the ball near midfield, then a 16-yard reception to Mason Page to set up a first down on the Lions' 36-yard line. As time expired, the Quakers rushed Mason Walters out to the field, who saw his 51-yard attempt fall just short.
"The resiliency of our crew really showed up today," Poppe added. "Being down 24-7 on the road and ended up one point better today against a really good Penn team."
Coleman finished the night with six catches for 90 yards and three touchdowns. He now has eight of the season, a new rookie record for the Lions. Goodwin finished the night going 17-for-40 for 237 yards and three touchdowns along with a pair of interceptions.
Griffin Johnson finished the evening with 80 yards rushing on 21 carries. He has now surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in his career, becoming the 25th Lion running back to accomplish the feat.
Columbia returns to Robert K. Kraft Field next Saturday, October 24, to take on Dartmouth for Homecoming. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
