Lions Take Care of Business, Capture Share of Ivy League Crown

NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team handled its win over Harvard in a very workmanlike way, winning eight of the 10 bouts en route to a 38-9 victory over the Crimson. In doing so, the Lions clinched at least a share of the Ivy League title, the first conference title since 1982.
"I'm super proud of the team, they really rallied together," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Donny Pritzloff said. "We had a great two weeks of training, you saw it tonight, the guys were scoring a lot of points. They were executing, they're getting after it. And that's what we preach every day, guys getting after it. I'm just excited for the whole program. All the donors, all the alums, all the extra wrestlers, and all the people who have come through here. This is a really exciting moment, and we are going to put a stamp on it tomorrow."
Saturday's win gives Columbia a 9-3 overall dual record this year; they are now 4-0 in Ivy League play. A win tomorrow over visiting Brown could give Columbia the outright title.
Sulayman Bah opened the proceedings with a 16-1 tech fall over Logan Brzozowski. After early handfighting, Bah notched a takedown midway through the first period and never looked back.
Evin Gursoy made it 9-0 in favor of the Lions after winning by a 16-4 major decision over Coleman Nogle. Gursoy led, 6-2, after one, thanks to a pair of takedowns. In the second, a four-point near fall by Gursoy made it 10-3. Heading into the third, Gursoy chose the down position and scored a reversal and then another takedown to close it out.
Lorenzo Frezza notched the first of four Columbia wins by fall. Pinning Dante Frinzi late in the third period. That ended the Lions' run of three consecutive wins to open the bout, but saw them out front 15-0.
After losses at 149 and 157, Cesar Alvan got the momentum squarely back in the Lions' corner with an 8-5 win over Joseph Cangro. With the bout tied 4-4 in the third, Cangro chose down and escaped to lead 5-4 briefly. Alvan answered with a 3-point takedown and rode out the period for the 8-5 win.
Nick Fine narrowly missed out on yet another tech fall when he defeated Haden Bottiglieri by a 10-0 major decision.
At 197, Joe Curtis recorded his 11th win by fall against Division I opponents when he defeated Matthew Walsh. The victory clinched the match for Columbia, who led 28-9 at that point.
However, the Lions closed it out with emphatic victories by Jack Wehmeyer at 197 and Vincent Mueller at 285. Wehmeyer pinned Hudson Skove at the 2:22 mark in the first period. Mueller improved to 4-0 in Ivy League play with a 12-0 major decision over Daniel Bittner.
Columbia returns to Levien Gym tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Brown. The match against the Bears is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
