Lions take sole possession of Ivy League title, fifth in program history
NEW YORK – The Columbia wrestling team capped off its historic Ivy League run with a resounding 28-10 win over visiting Brown on Sunday. With the win, the Lions are the outright Ivy League Champions, the fifth in program history.
Behind six individual victories and bonus-point performances that set the tone early, Columbia captured its first Ivy League wrestling title since 1982. The championship marks the fifth Ivy League title in program history for the Lions and their first in 44 years, joining previous crowns in 1961, '80, '81, and '82.
Columbia (10-3, 5-0 Ivy) seized control immediately and never relinquished it, winning seven of 10 bouts in front of a raucous home crowd that was also on hand for Alumni Day.
The Lions opened with a statement at 125 pounds as Sulayman Bah overwhelmed Chase Yasutake in a 15-0 technical fall in 1:57, staking Columbia to a 5-0 lead. Evin Gursoy followed with a tremendous showing at 133, pinning Douglas Shipers in 2:40 to push the margin to 11-0.
After Brown's Khimari Manns edged No. 21 Lorenzo Frezza, 13-11, at 141 to put the Bears on the board, Columbia responded with four straight victories to effectively put the dual out of reach.
Richard Fedalen controlled Austin McBurney, 5-2, at 149, before No. 20 Kai Owen delivered a dominant 9-0 major decision at 157. No. 17 Cesar Alvan extended the run with an 11-4 decision at 165, stretching Columbia's advantage to 21-3 and tightening the Lions' grip on the title.
Brown found life at 174 with a major decision from Drew Clearie, but Columbia answered again at 184. No. 15 Aaraon Ayzerov turned in one of the afternoon's most emphatic performances, blanking Connor O'Donnell, 13-0, in a major decision to seal the championship at 25-7.
Andrew Reall claimed a 4-1 sudden victory decision over Jack Wehmeyer at 197, cutting the deficit to 15, but heavyweight No. 28 Vincent Mueller shut the door. Mueller edged No. 25 Alex Semenenko, 1-0, in a tense defensive battle at 285, touching off the celebration as Columbia secured the 28-10 final.
Next Sunday, the Lions will wrap up the regular season when they host Bucknell for Senior Day. There will be a special pre-match ceremony honoring the Lions' stellar senior class. The match against the Bison is scheduled for a noon start.
