The Lions swept the competition and earned the Bilodeau and Preschel Trophies after topping NYU
NEW YORK — The Columbia fencing teams coasted to a combined 6-0 mark at the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet, hosted by NYU on Wednesday evening. The women improved to 28-1 in dual matches this season, and the men are now 24-3.
The women earned the Katy Bilodeau Trophy for the fourth straight year, while the men retained the Irving Martin Preschel Trophy for the fifth consecutive season after victories over the Violets to begin the competition. The women were in control for all three weapons in a 24-3 victory, while the men picked up a 16-11 decision.
Both squads picked up 17-10 victories over Sacred Heart in the second round. The women won while just competing in three bouts in sabre. In round three, Columbia topped Vassar, 25-2, in the women's event, and the men won, 18-9.
Women's foil dropped just one bout on the evening and was led by 9-0 records by Mikayla Chusid and Nadia Hayes. On the men's side, Luka Loncar went 6-0 in epee, while Will Morrill was 6-0 in sabre.
As has been tradition in recent years, the Lions shifted the lineups in rounds two and three to allow seniors to fence in different disciplines in their final dual meet.
The women's team will host Hunter College on Friday, February 27, in the fencing room of the Dodge Physical Fitness Center. Both teams are back in action next Sunday, March 8, at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, hosted by Vassar.
