Lions extend winning streak to three
NEW YORK – The 52nd-ranked Columbia women's tennis team made quick work of visiting FDU, defeating the Knights 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
With the win, Columbia improves to 6-2 on the year and 4-0 at home.
The Lions seized the momentum, securing the doubles point in rapid succession. Columbia's number three tandem of Emily Baek and Sophia Wang soundly defeated FDU's duo of Valentina Silva and Katsiaryna Kostsina 6-0. Columbia's duo broke serve to open the match and didn't let up.
The only competition left was to see who would clinch the doubles point for the Lions. In the end, Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin secured the point with a 6-2 win over Anastasia Lim and Yelena Kim. The Lions jumped out to an early lead, breaking serve to take a 2-0 advantage and continued from there.
On court two, the Lions' duo of Amber Yin and Michelle Li were tied 4-4 with Sophia Fredericks-McKee and Ann Kato when the match was halted.
In singles play, the Lions clinched the match with a series of straight-set victories. Krishnan gave the Lions a 2-0 lead when she defeated Lim 6-2, 6-1. Margaret Hui runs her unbeaten streak to five matches after posting a 6-3, 6-2 win over Valentina Silva.
Sophia Wang clinched the match with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over Sophia Fredericks-McKee. Sabrina Lin immediately followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Katsiaryna Kostsina.
Emily Baek and Michelle Li were both leading in their respective matches when the dual was finished.
