Joshua Adams wins silver in the Long Jump
NEW YORK– Columbia track & field team found success on the first day at the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships, earning three medals and 12 more student-athletes advancing to tomorrow's finals.
Senior Joshua Adams had the Lions' top finish of the day, winning silver in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.31m. Sophomore Rocco Carpinello was right behind him in fourth at 7.19m.
As a team, the men's squad collected 14 points and sits in third place, while the women's team has yet to come away with a point.
Junior Parker Kim put the Lions on the board in the men's weight throw, placing fifth with a mark of 20.01m.
Senior Haydn Brotschi won the men's 400m preliminary round to earn the finals berth with a time of 46.82.
Sophomore Caden Cutchall set a new personal best time in the 500m to continue his run in the final, clocking 1:03.62.
In the men's 800m preliminary round, senior Jacob Van Orden was first to cross the finish line in 1:50.95, followed by junior Justin Gottlieb in 1:51.36 to punch a ticket to finals.
Senior Lucy Henkel placed sixth overall in women's 800m preliminary, clocking 2:08.58 to earn a chance to qualify for the NCAA indoor.
Senior Matt Gatune paced Columbia with a runner-up finish in the 1,000m, clocking a 2:24.43 in Heat 2 to take second overall. Junior Nicholas Hayden added a sixth-place showing for the Lions, crossing in 2:30.07 in Heat 3.
Senior Daniela Quintero turned in a personal-best performance in the 1,000m prelims, clocking 2:50.02 to finish fifth overall and lead the Lions. First-year Meredith Wolfe also recorded a personal best, placing seventh in 2:51.03 as Columbia placed two runners inside the top seven in a tightly contested field.
Senior Haydn Brotschi delivered a season-best performance in the 200m prelims, clocking 21.46 to finish third overall and position himself strongly heading into the finals at the Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships.
First-year Adam Jaros recorded a personal-best leap of 6.29 meters (20-7.75) to finish seventh, marking a strong showing for the Lions and continuing his upward trajectory this indoor season.
