PRINCETON, N.J. — The Columbia women's fencing team went 4-0, while the men posted a 1-1 mark on the opening day of the Ivy League Round Robin Championships on Saturday. Both squads have two more rounds on Sunday in their quests for conference crowns.
The women were dominant all day, starting with a 24-3 win over Brown. The Lions proceeded to take down Penn, 18-9, and coasted to a 21-6 triumph in round three over Cornell. Columbia had a tougher time out of the gates against Yale, but settled in to pick up another 18-9 decision over the Bulldogs. Women's foil was specifically strong, going 33-3 on the opening day of the competition.
The Lions, who control their destiny in their quest for their 15th Ivy League women's title, will face Harvard at 9 a.m. Sunday morning, and wrap things up against Princeton at 12:45 p.m.
Individually, Carolina Stuchbury is one of four women's foilists undefeated at 9-0. Zander Rhodes posted a 10-1 mark to stay in the mix for the individual title in the weapon. Tamar Gordon went 7-2 in women's sabre and sits fourth heading into the final day, while Sumin Lee led women's epee with a 6-4 mark.
In the afternoon, the men fell into an early hole against Princeton, but fought back to pull within a bout before the Tigers pulled away for a 15-12 victory. Columbia bounced back to earn a 15-12 win over Yale to keep its championship hopes alive.
The Lion men will wrap up the tournament on Sunday against Penn at 2:15, followed by a matchup against Harvard at 5 p.m.
Marsel Nagimov led men's foil with a 4-2 mark to sit in second place in the individual standings.
"Both teams battled through hard, close bouts all day long," said head coach Michael Aufrichtig. "The women put themselves in a great position today, and don't count out our men. There's still a lot of fencing to go tomorrow, so we need to turn the page. If we focus on the task at hand, I'm confident things will fall into place for us."
